Daly Dose 02-09-22 Our Super Bowl LVI preview with Coach Mac

This week on the Daly Dose YouTube video, we are joined by long time basketball coach Russ McKinstry to break down how Super Bowl LVI between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams will play out.

We look back on the NFL season, and the recent controversy with Brian Flores. Could that lawsuit have an impact on the league?

The Denver Broncos have a new head coach, and we discuss the differences between Nathaniel Hackett and the previous regime.

Then we turn our attention to the Super Bowl. Can Joe Burrow and the surprising Bengals pull off one more upset? What are the Bengals weaknesses? Are the Los Angeles Rams too talented to trip up in the big game? What could be their downfall? We look at the offenses, the defenses, the quarterbacks, and the coaches and let you know how this big game is going to finish!

Daly Dose 02-02-22 The craziest Tom Brady facts

This week on the Daly Dose YouTube video, we reflect on the incredible career of the most decorated quarterback in NFL history, as our Daly Dose Top 5 counts down five stats about Tom Brady that seem like they must be made up, but are actually true!

Five big takeaways from NFL Wild Card Weekend

By Jimmie Searfoss

The NFL expanded its postseason bracket to 14 teams rather than the usual 12 for the 2021-22 season, and after the dust settled on the Wild Card Weekend, fans were reminded why they enjoyed the 12-team format so much.

The new playoff bracket allowed for two wild card games. This means both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles snuck into the playoffs. Neither of these teams should’ve been there. Instead, they played in games that involved them getting blown out, and players on both sides risking injury.

In fact, of the six wild card games that took place over the weekend, only two were close. The new playoff format was one of the many discussions that took place over wild card weekend. Another was the age gap between the oldest quarterback in the playoffs, 44-year-old Tom Brady, and the youngest, 24-year-old Kyler Murray. The age gap between them is old enough to date Leonardo DiCaprio. A few other takeaways from this last weekend include:

The Chiefs aren’t as invincible as they looked Sunday

Yes, they put up 42 points. Yes, Patrick Mahomes threw for over 400 yards and five touchdowns. But when playing against the Steelers could you expect much else? Ben Roethlisberger said it himself.

“We probably aren’t supposed to be here [the playoffs]. We’re probably not a very good football team,” said Roethlisberger to team reporter Teresa Varley a few days before the game.

For a team with as much talent offensively as the Chiefs have, they have looked incredibly beatable all season. While their record stands at 12-5 during the regular season, a large portion of the games they played in have been determined by one score or less. Their defense has been a particular weakness as they rank near the bottom in both passing and rushing yards allowed per game. On Sunday they play a team they already lost to by 18 in the Buffalo Bills. The Bills not only have one of the best defenses in the league but rank third in points per game. This could easily be a repeat of their last meeting.

The Cowboys have a personality problem, NOT a coaching one

It didn’t take long for Cowboys fans to call for the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy after their loss to the 49ers last Sunday 23-17. It was not McCarthy’s fault they lost the game. The Cowboys racked up 14 penalties throughout the game, and put themselves in a position where they were racing against the clock on their final drive, which led to their eventual loss. Ultimately, this lands on the players.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott felt differently. In a press conference after the game a reporter informed Prescott that Cowboys fans were throwing objects at referees.

“Credit to them,” replied Prescott.

Although he apologized a few days later, the team captain condoning violence against referees is a terrible look for the team. No accountability was taken for the penalties, nor for the poor performances on both sides of the ball. Still, fans will continue to blame the coach that led them to their best season in the last five years.

The Bucs could win it all again

Brady has spent another year ageless, and the NFL has spent another year at his mercy. He’s been the best quarterback in the NFL by almost every metric and has led the Buccaneers offense to over 30 points per game, the second most in the league. On the other side of the ball the Buccaneers have sported one of the best rushing defenses in the game.

Their win over the Eagles, much like the Chiefs win against the Steelers, was basically handed to them. What makes their win more convincing than the Chiefs is simply Tom Brady. Nobody has been in a playoff situation more than he has. His opponent will be the LA Rams, a team that allowed more passing yards in the regular season than any other NFC playoff team. Here we go again.

The 49ers have a finishing problem

The 49ers nearly allowed a Cowboys team that looked all but beaten, to take the lead late into the fourth quarter last Sunday. This has been a recurring pattern all season long. Luckily for them their defense can bail them out of tight spots in late games. That will be tested Saturday when they take on the Green Bay Packers. They are going to need to figure out how to score points late, because with Aaron Rodgers leading the Packers, no lead is safe.

The two teams met in week three, where the Packers left as the winner after Rodgers led them downfield in the closing seconds of the game to line them up for a 51-yard field goal to win. Look to them to rely even harder on running back and receiver Deebo Samuel, who bullied the Cowboys defense in the Wild Card game. Samuel is a part of a solid receiving core that also includes George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk, both of whom will need to step it up to prevent history from repeating itself.

The Bengals fate could come down to Derrick Henry

Tennessee Running Back Derrick Henry dominated the league before injuring his foot midway through the season. However, the Titans appear to be hoping to have him back for their playoff game this Saturday against the Bengals. After a full contact practice on Tuesday, Henry is said to be feeling good, and on track to appear in Saturday’s game.

This is probably the worst possible news for the Bengals. While they have a solid run defense, trying to stop Henry is a whole different ball game. When he was healthy, he essentially ran his way to victories with the entire team on his back.  When he was gone though, the Titans became a very beatable team. Unfortunately for Cincinnati fans, it’s looking like he will most likely make his return this Saturday. Fortunately for Titans fans, there is a penalty for any player thinking of playing dirty and sweeping Henry’s leg, 15 yards and an automatic first down. That’s called unnecessary roughness.

Bills Mafia is insane

Did you see what they threw on the field after a touchdown? Do they not check for these types of things when entering the stadium?

Now, the real fun begins. The fat has been cut and only the best remains. The weekend of football can’t come any faster.

Daly Doses 09-07-21: Thoughts, reflections, and derision from the Mile High City

The NFL season kicks off on Thursday night, when the Dallas Cowboys go to Tampa to face the Super Bowl Champion Buccaneers.

Tom Brady and a lot of talent around him, taking on that defense?

I think I’ll bet the over.

No matter what the over is.

Our hometown Denver Broncos will kickoff Sunday morning against the New York Giants, in what is a very pivotal season, for a number of people within the organization.

Head coach Vic Fangio needs to prove he is truly an NFL head coach.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater needs to prove that he is a bona fide NFL starting quarterback.

General manager George Paton needs to prove that the Broncos made the right move in bringing him in, and allowing him to assemble personnel.

And the Pat Bowlen family needs to prove that they can do the right thing, by selling this franchise off to a legitimate owner, that will come in and run it, in a first class manner.

It’s what Pat would have wanted.

The college football season kicked off in full force this past weekend, and it seems to be another banner year in the Rocky Mountain Region.

The Colorado Buffaloes rolled to an easy win over Ed McCaffrey’s Northern Colorado squad 35-7.

I understand the Buffs fans being hyped, but it’s hard to get too excited over a Pac 12 team beating an FCS Big Sky team, that is coming back from a year hiatus.

The Colorado State Rams wish they could get that excited. They hosted the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, an FCS team from the Missouri Valley, and were completely outclassed 42-23.

The Wyoming Cowboys also started off against an FCS Big Sky opponent, and had to squeak out a last second victory over Montana State 19-16, in the final minutes.

Finally, the Air Force Falcons cruised to an easy 35-14 victory over the Lafayette Leopards, a member of the FCS Patriot League.

I know that the narrative is that this area only gets excited about the NFL, but looking at the college football in this area…what else do you expect?

All of these teams appear to be very average, or significantly below average. Pardon us for not being thrilled to watch another year of mediocrity.

I remember the glory days of McCartney at CU, Lubick at CSU, and DeBerry at Air Force. This region was excited to support these programs, pack the stadiums, and tune in every week.

The fact is, that the administrations in this state have made the choice to not spend big money on their athletic programs.

It shows.

We can act like you just can’t be consistently successful in this region, and that we are just at the mercy of simple geography.

But where would you rather live?

Boulder, Colorado?

Or Norman, Oklahoma?

Fort Collins, Colorado?

Or Boise, Idaho?

It isn’t even close. Yet here we are, while those two cities are consistently in the Top 25.

The Colorado Buffaloes won their weird National Championship in 1990.

Since then, Colorado and Colorado State have been to 15 bowl games.

Wyoming has been to just seven bowl games.

The Air Force Academy has been to 17.

Think about that: a military academy has consistently been the best college football program in the state.

That doesn’t look like it’s changing anytime soon.

Daly Dose 07-14-21 Winners and losers from the world of sports

This week on the Daly Dose, we discuss how disappointing National Nude Day will be this year.

Major League Baseball makes an announcement about their rules, but we are noticing some insincerity!

Then, we look at some winners and losers from the world of sports recently. We find winners and losers from college sports, the NFL, MLB, the NBA, UFC, the NHL, and even some Olympic athletes!

Finally, with the Supreme Court ruling that NCAA athletes can now begin to profit off of their name, image, and likeness, we reflect on some athletes from previous eras that could have made some serious money!

Which former NCAA superstars could have done well in this new era? Our Daly Dose Top 5 counts down some very interesting possibilities!

Daly Dose 06-16-21 The best of the Daly Dose

This week on the Daly Dose, you might not realize it, but June 16th is actually a pretty historic day in sports! We discuss a few of the all time greats that were born today, a franchise changing move in the NBA, and the International Olympic Committee doing what they do best!

Then, we are flashing back to a Daly Dose Episode from back in 2015! We had just returned from a trip to California and Disneyland, and we discussed the pain and anguish involved in that trip.

The New York Jets had some internal strife, the New England Patriots were battling the NFL, and the world of boxing was a mess as usual!

The Pro Football Hall of Fame had just elected a new class, but we also look at a few of the deserving players that were left out.

Finally, we were counting down the Top 5 left handed NFL quarterbacks of all time!

Daly Dose 05-19-21 The Top 5 CDC announcements you missed

This week on the Daly Dose YouTube video, with the Center for Disease Prevention and Prevention announcing last week that we could begin backing off of the mask and spacing protocols, we count down the Top 5 OTHER announcements that the CDC also disclosed that no one noticed!

Daly Dose 01-27-21 Super Bowl LV is set!

This week on the Daly Dose, Super Bowl LV is now set as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be meeting the Kansas City Chiefs in the big game. We recap the NFC Championship. Did Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur cost his team the game? The Kansas City Chiefs have one player that proved to be extremely valuable against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game. We also remember the amazing career and life of Hank Aaron, and we even have some really good news this week in college sports!

Then, we begin to take a look forward to both college basketball and the NBA seasons. But before we do, I explain why I am not particularly pleased with College Basketball right now, and why some of our leaders need to step up their game!

Then we examine some of the biggest storylines in college hoops. Who are the top teams? Who are some of the top players, and who are the best conferences in this odd season?

We discuss that lack of surprises that we can expect in the NBA, but there are a few teams that have caught our attention.

Finally, our Daly Dose Top 5 takes a look at five better options for getting out the vaccines for this worldwide pandemic. We have five options that can get us back on track quickly!

Daly Dose 10-28-20 Our spooky Halloween sports conspiracies

This week on the Daly Dose, it is Halloween week, and we discuss the challenges of Halloween in 2020.

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the 2020 World Series in an amazing redemption story for so many, but it had to be painful for one fan base.

The University of Arizona basketball program has a lack of institutional control, the NBA could have a very short offseason, The Big 10 has restarted football, but not everyone was a winner, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers clearly don’t believe in math or science.

Then, in honor of Halloween, we are taking a closer look at some of the biggest sports conspiracies in history! Did MLB cover for Cal Ripken Jr? Did Muhammad Ali benefit from a “phantom punch”? Did the NBA fix a game for the Los Angeles Lakers? Did the NFL destroy New England Patriots “spygate” evidence? Plus we have a college basketball point shaving conspiracy, a college football drug conspiracy, and even an NFL conspiracy that involves an unsolved murder!

Finally, if you are still trying to come up with a Halloween costume, our Daly Dose Top 5 counts down five simple sports related costumes that you can put together on short notice!
