Daly Dose 03-23-22 The Dose is back from spring break!

This week on the Dose, we are back after taking a week off for spring break, and we share one odd story from our experience with a major airline.

We update the Daly Dose March Madness Bracket standings, and then we dive into some sports news.

The NFL Draft has a prospect that may need to be tested for some sort of substance, and one NHL team is revealing why they are in the middle of the worst drought ever.

Then we dive into some of the bigger stories that we have missed over the past week, and some of the things that we have learned! The NCAA Tournament has been full of upsets and surprises, what can we expect next? The NFL offseason has already seen a ton of movement and quarterbacks are relocating all over the league. Major League Baseball has ended their lockout, what big changes will we see when the season begins? One NBA player is becoming the butt of a number of jokes, and we look at whether or not he is being treated unfairly.

Finally, with the Baylor Bears 25-point comeback coming up short against North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament, we countdown the Top 5 March Madness comebacks of all time!

Daly Dose 03-09-22 Our 2022 March Madness bracket advice

This week on the Dose, we remember a number of very eccentric sports personalities that have been born on March 9th.

We also remind listeners to go join our Daly Dose March Madness Bracket Challenge when the NCAA Tournament brackets are released on Selection Sunday this weekend.

The Duke Blue Devils lost Coach K’s final game at home, the Green Bay Packers gave Aaron Rodgers a new deal, and the Denver Broncos made a big trade to finally get a franchise quarterback! We also discuss why the NFL is coming down so hard on Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley, and the NFL is moving on from Covid!

Then, we begin to look forward to the 2022 NCAA Tournament! Which teams are truly contenders to win it all? Which big name programs could leave you a little disappointed? And which teams are out there that could end up busting some brackets and being this year’s Cinderellas?

Finally, our Daly Dose Top 5 takes a look back at some teams that just barely made the tournament and were placed in the First Four. Yet, they somehow ended up winning some games and busting some brackets!

Daly Dose 01-19-22 Raymond from DC is back on the Dose!

This week on the Daly Dose YouTube video, we are joined by a long time friend of the Dose to look at a number of sports subjects!

We talk about college basketball, and some of the top teams in the country. We look at the NBA: Will the Golden State Warriors be able to keep up this current pace, and is there any reason to have faith in the Brooklyn Nets?

The College Football Playoff just completed, and we wonder if the current format is the best. How can other conferences catch up with the SEC? Is the current transfer rule going to be best for the game and the players?

Then we turn our focus to the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs. The Cincinnati Bengals were able to scrape out a close win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Did the officials steal the game from the Raiders? The Buffalo Bills pounded the New England Patriots, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers blew out the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Kansas City Chiefs cruised past the Pittsburgh Steelers. Was the playoff expansion the reason for some of the lopsided games? The San Francisco 49ers held on to upset the Dallas Cowboys, and once again the officiating was in the news. Who was to blame for the Cowboys collapse? Finally, we look forward to what we might expect in the Divisional round, and moving forward on the way to Super Bowl LVI!

Daly Dose 01-05-22 Remembering 2021 in sports and a look forward to 2022

This week on the Dose, we recap some of the fun bowl games that we saw over the weekend and we look at what took place in those CFB Playoff games! The Alabama Crimson Tide overpowered the Cincinnati Bearcats to advance to the National Championship game! They will be facing the Georgia Bulldogs, who blew out the Michigan Wolverines in the Orange Bowl? So who will be winning the title on Monday night? We take a look at some key storylines, and we make our prediction for the big game!

Antonio Brown internally combusted, and there is a former Ohio State Buckeye that is unhappy. The NBA viewership numbers from Christmas Day are in, and there could be big changes coming. Plus, we also have an inspiring story of perseverance in the NBA!

Then we take a look back at some of the biggest stories from sports in 2021! We remember big seasons from Alabama, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Baylor Bears! Coaches were on the move, players were changing teams, and we saw a huge comeback story!

Finally, with the new year finally here, our Daly Dose Top 5 is making five BOLD predictions for sports in the year 2022!

The Pac 12 continues to struggle at the Alamo Bowl

By Jimmie Searfoss

It was another Alamo (Bowl) to forget for the Pac-12 as their representative Oregon Ducks took a hard loss from the Oklahoma Sooners Wednesday night 32-47. While the Ducks did manage to muster up 32 points, the score does not accurately reflect the game. Oklahoma moved the ball seemingly at will against the Ducks. The Sooners racked up over 300 yards on the ground, while averaging nine yards per pass. With the loss, the Pac 12 is now 0-2 for the 2021-2022 bowl game season. They share the spot for worst win percentage this year with the SEC, who is also winless.

The Valero Alamo Bowl has been a harsh reality check for the Pac-12 for the last 12 years. In 2010, the Big 12 and the Pac 12 signed a contract guaranteeing the participation of the best available teams in each conference based on ranking. Historically these games have not gone in the Pac 12’s favor. Their record since 2010 is 3-9.

The trip to the Alamodome has not always been a death sentence for the Pac 12. For the first half of the 2010’s it was a relatively competitive bowl filled with high scoring affairs. In 2011 Heisman Winner Robert Griffin III led his Baylor Bears over the Washington Huskies 67-56 in a game that broke the record for the highest scoring game in NCAA bowl history. This was followed three years later with another high scoring game that saw 14 ranked UCLA hold off 11 ranked Kansas State for a 40-35 win for the Pac-12. In fact, from 2010-2014, the Pac 12 held a record of 2-3.

Then 2015 happened.

The Pac 12’s worst loss took place in 2015. Oregon, ranked 15 at the time, took on TCU, ranked 11. The game was one for the record books as TCU, who was down 31-0 at half, tied the NCAA record for largest comeback ever in a bowl game to win in triple overtime 47-41. It was a devastating loss for Oregon, and began a three-year losing streak for the Pac-12.

The loss was followed in 2016 with a 30-point beatdown by number 12 ranked Oklahoma State on number 10 ranked Colorado. Colorado is the highest ranked Pac 12 team to compete in the Valero Alamo Bowl since the College Football Playoff era began. They would again make the trip to San Antonio in 2020, only to have a similar outcome as they suffered a loss to Texas 55-23.

The Valero Alamo Bowl is proof to what everyone already knows, Pac 12 football simply cannot compete with other conferences. The conference has only two premier teams in the last 12 years, USC and Oregon. USC has never played in the bowl, and Oregon is responsible for two of the conference’s three wins. The only other team to win was Washington State who held on for a victory in 2018 against Iowa State.

The rankings going into the games make the situation worse. The Pac 12 has been the higher ranked team in seven of the twelve games since the beginning of the contract. Their record is a mere 2-5 in those games.

With Oregon’s loss Wednesday night, who in the Pac 12 can compete with anyone in the Big 12? The Ducks were the most qualified team the conference had to beat Oklahoma, the Big 12’s third best team, and they were handled soundly. The only other team the Pac 12 has to offer to a team of that caliber is Utah, who lost to SDSU and BYU. Utah will be tested in the Rose Bowl against No. 6 Ohio State, a team Oregon beat earlier in the year.

On top of everything else, the Valero Alamo Bowl is nearly always a home game for the Big 12. Ten of the twelve games have featured a Texas or Oklahoma school. The closest Pac 12 school to San Antonio is Arizona, which is a short 12-hour drive.

The Valero Alamo Bowl is a game where the Pac 12 is set up to fail from the very start, it only makes sense they extend their relationship to it until 2025. It is a move only the Pac 12 would make.

Davy Crockett once said, “You may all go to hell, I’ll go to Texas.”

In the case of the Pac-12, hell might not be such a bad option.

Daly Dose 12-08-21 Coach Mac is back!

This week on the Daly Dose, we review the CFB Playoff selections and look briefly at the upcoming matchups in the Cotton Bowl and the Orange Bowl. Did the committee get it right? The Heisman Trophy presentation is on Saturday, and we predict who will be winning it. And we have a tragic story in the world of sports that will be largely ignored.

Then, we are joined by longtime friend of the show basketball coach Russ McKinstry to discuss all things sports! Coach Mac tells us what he has been up to, and how he has been keeping busy this football season!

We talk about the CFB Playoff selections, and the massive coaching changes that we have seen in College Football. Why did Brian Kelly leave Notre Dame? Why did Lincoln Riley feel like USC would be a better fit than Oklahoma?

The NFL season has been unpredictable, and we evaluate the positives and negatives of parity in the league. Can the Denver Broncos expect a new head coach soon?

The NBA is off to a slow start, Major League Baseball is locked out, and we look at some of the College Basketball teams that are grabbing our attention so far. Plus, we look at why so many great coaches are retiring and getting out of the business that they love so much!

Coach Mac is back, and we have a number of things to catch up on, this week on the Dose!

Today, our Daly Dose Top 5 counts down the Top 5 other times in NCAA Tournament history that the Final Four proved to be way more compelling than the actual championship game.
