Is a former Buff the key to playoff success for the Dallas Mavericks?

By Jimmie Searfoss

Simply put, the Dallas Mavericks and Kristaps Porzingis didn’t work out. After reported locker room “dust ups” with star Luka Doncic that were confirmed by owner Mark Cuban, it was clear that Porzingis’ time in Dallas was running out fast.

On February 11, the Mavericks made a move to trade Porzingis and a 2022 second round pick to the Washington Wizards for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans in a move that Sports Illustrated graded a C+.

It turned out to be one of the best trades of the deadline, and it’s all because of Dinwiddie.

Dinwiddie, an eight-year veteran out of the University of Colorado, joined to replace Porzingis as a secondary scorer and take some pressure off Doncic to carry the offense.

Dinwiddie has become a vital player to Dallas’ offense since joining the team.

Offensively, he has been playing the best basketball of his career on the Mavericks. With the Wizards, Dinwiddie was averaging 12.6 points per game. During his time as a Maverick, he averaged 16.4. His three-point percentage has increased from 31% to 38%, and his field goal percentage has shot up from 37% to 49%.

Where he has made himself the most known is in the closing minutes of the game.

Dinwiddie hit game-winning three-point shots in back-to-back games against the Nets and Celtics. The shot against the Nets was a heavily contested and was described by Nets coach Steve Nash as “guarded perfectly.”

The day after the Nets game winner, the Mavericks shot up to number one on CBS’ NBA power rankings. Since the trade they have gone 16-7 and clinched a playoff berth.

Most importantly, he has gotten the Luka Doncic seal of approval.

“He’s a baller. That’s how I’m going to describe him,” said Doncic to Mavericks reporter Callie Caplan.

Doncic trusts him enough to let him take the last shot, and that alone is a feat in itself.

As the Mavericks look towards the playoffs, they will need Dinwiddie to keep up his hot shooting. The Mavericks have made the playoffs the last two years and have exited after the first round both times. They currently sit as the 4th seed in the West.

Dinwiddie has limited experience in the playoffs. The most minutes he’s seen was from the 2019 series while he was with the Nets. He played just 26 minutes. In those 26 minutes he shot 44% from the field and 38% from the three-point line.

The Mavericks will expect a much larger role from Dinwiddie in the upcoming weeks. If he can produce like he has since being traded, the Mavericks may finally see the second round.
