Daly Doses 05-03-22: Thoughts, reflections, and derision from the Mile High City

The 2022 NFL Draft finished up over the weekend.

Now the business of grading each teams draft, and even each teams individual picks begins.

Do any of these grades from so-called “draft experts” mean anything?

Of course not.

But they’re fun.

Do they always make sense? Not even close.

Go look up the draft grades for our Denver Broncos draft and you will get mostly B’s. You will also get a few “this was the worst draft of the year” hot takes.

After trading their first round pick to Seattle for quarterback Russell Wilson, Broncos General Manager George Paton used his second round pick on Oklahoma edge rusher Nik Bonitto.

Bonitto is a speed rusher that is very good at getting to the quarterback. He gives the Broncos depth at pass rusher, and he serves notice that Bradley Chubb needs to stay on the field and produce.

Paton then selected UCLA tight end Greg Dulcich with the Broncos 3rd round pick.

Since they lost Noah Fant in the Wilson trade, grabbing a tight end that can be a downfield threat seems to make sense.

Paton used Denver’s 4th round picks on athletic Pitt cornernback Damarri Mathis, and mammoth-sized Iowa State defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike (6-foot-6, 316 pounds). Both of these picks fill needs.

Oklahoma safety Delarrin Turner-Yell and Samford speedy wide receiver Montrell Washington, both selected in the 5th round, could provide special teams help.

Did the Broncos address every need in this draft?

Nope. Inside linebacker and more offensive line help would have been nice, but you can’t manufacture what isn’t there.

Yes, the Broncos twice passed up Georgia inside linebacker Nakobe Dean, and we will be watching to see if that was a mistake in judgement.

But understand this, the main course of the 2022 NFL Draft for the Denver Broncos was the acquisition of quarterback Russell Wilson.

Everything after that is just gravy on top.
