Golovkin vs. Alvarez judge announces she didn’t know which fighter was which

On Saturday night, the boxing world was stunned by a decision that didn’t seem to align with what they had just witnessed. Following a twelve-round war for the middleweight championship of the world between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, in which most people agreed that Golovkin got the better of, there was one key individual that disagreed.

One of the judges that was officially scoring the fight, did not see the fight going the way of Golovkin. Adalaide Byrd, a long time boxing and MMA judge, scored the fight 118-110 in favor of Alvarez. By comparison, judge Dave Moretti scored the fight 115-113 in favor and Golovkin, while Don Trella had the fight at 114-114- a draw.

The Nevada Athletic Commission announced on Sunday, that Byrd would not be assigned to any fights in the immediate future.

On Monday, Byrd announced the reason for her lopsided card. “I didn’t know which fighter was which.” she announced to the Daly Dose. “They are both the same size, same weight. It is all very confusing. I just picked a fighter and decided that he would be the winner.”

This isn’t the first time that Judge Byrd has had a confusing scorecard.

In 2008 Joe Calzaghe fought Bernard Hopkins for the light-heavyweight title, most had Calzaghe a clear winner. Byrd scored the fight 114-113 for Hopkins.

In 2016, promoters officially asked the Nevada Athletic Commission that she not serve as one of the judges for the Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Nicholas Walters fight. Their request was dismissed.

“People are going to say bad things about me. They are going to say I don’t know boxing.” Byrd stated. “That isn’t true at all. I have judged over 115 title fights. I know boxing. I just don’t know boxers all that well. Who won anyway?”
