Daly Doses: Thoughts, reflections, and derision from the Mile High City!

Doses

  • The Colorado Rockies mercifully ended their season on Sunday finishing 68-94 and dead last in the National League West.
  • As bad as they were, the Rockies weren’t without a bright spot.
  • Third baseman Nolan Arenado led the league in RBI’s (130) and finished tied for first in the National League for most home runs with 42.
  • Arenado is also the first Colorado player to lead the majors in RBIs since Andres Galarraga drove in 150 in 1996.
  • Arenado, just 24, was named National League Player of the Month for September. In 28 games, Arenado hit .339 (38-for-112) and led the majors with 11 home runs, 32 RBIs and 79 total bases. His 38 hits led the National League, while his .705 slugging percentage ranked second.
  • Which leaves us to play a little game called “Where will Nolan Arrenado end up when the Rockies cut salary and trade him in two or three years?”
  • I’m going to say Tampa Bay. They should have some money laying around.
  • But I suppose Oakland is a possibility too. And Arenado is a California kid.
  • Oh I know.
  • “They would never do that! He is a bright young talent! He is their future!”
  • Tell that to Troy Tulowitzki.
  • Or Dexter Fowler.
  • Or Ubaldo Jimenez.
  • Or Matt Holliday.
  • On Saturday the Air Force Academy, Colorado State, and University of Colorado college football teams were beaten by a combined score of 53-107.
  • Which is kind of funny, because the local media keeps telling us every year how this is finally the year that Colorado and Colorado State are really going to be special.
  • In fact, last week one of the big talking points on Denver sports radio was “When Colorado upsets Oregon should their fans storm the field?”
  • This is the equivalent of me trying to plan how I will accept the Republican Presidential Nomination.
  • Or… you know…Donald Trump planning how to accept it.
  • I understand the limitations that the Air Force Academy has with athletics. And I root for those kids. Getting to play football is the easiest, and honestly most meaningless, part of their day.
  • But when I see programs like Utah and Boise State able to compete with the big boys it makes me wonder why our state schools are so snakebitten.
  • Maybe the Buffs and Rams need to bring back Bill McCartney and Sonny Lubick.
  • Hey, it worked for Kansas State.
  • Bill Snyder is older than Mac and Sonny combined and Kansas State is at least competitve every season.
  • That old vampire clearly feeds on the blood of the youth and he is still going at a high level.
  • I wonder if Peyton Manning has looked into that?
